Notes
Further
below, I list YouTube links to the preeminent performances of "The Souling
Song": namely, Sting (2009); Tom Jackson (1989), and Peter, Paul and Mary
(1963). Here I mention some changes they made in the modern lyrics, as compared to
the 1893 original (reprinted below).
While Peter, Paul, and Mary
appended verses from two unrelated songs — "Hey Ho Nobody Home", and "God
Rest You Merry Gentlemen" — they did not really fit, and, unlike Jackson's, the version by
Sting commendably omits them, as does mine.
The PPM remake also changes the third line
of verse one, from
Likewise young men and maidens,
your cattle and your store;
to
The cattle in your stable,
The dog at your front door;
an usage picked up by Sting, Jackson, and others.
(Perhaps it was to avoid confusion between an older sense of "store" meaning "foodstuff
in storage" vs. now, "a place where one buys groceries"?) Therefore, I have included that variation.
In Sting's version, the refrain's first line was changed, from
A soul! A soul! A soul-cake!
to
A soul-cake! A soul-cake!
— which blurs the purpose, about praying for souls in return for that cake. I stick to the original.
As well, Sting's refrain was
fattened by repeating the first two lines before going on to "One for Peter".
I have never liked excessively repetitive songs or choruses, so I keep the
original's refrain of 8 soul cakes as it was, without inserting 21 extra ones
for 29 in the entire song.
Two other differences in the Sting (and Tom Jackson) version from PPM, and the original, is
that in verse 2, each use a mis-rhyme, namely "pear", which does not match
"year", except in spelling. The original is:
with your apples and strong beer;
not:
with your apple and your pear
while PPM is even worse:
with your apple and strawber'
I
myself changed "strong beer" to "your beer" for smoother diction. For the
same diction reason, I adopted the modern singers' change from:
we hope you will prove kind
to
we hope you will be kind
Two other fine points: I add "Go" to
Down into the cellar
and change the word "grow" to "go" in this obvious mis-transcription; (some recordings correct it; some don't);
And all the little children,
that round your table grow.
I also tidied a few mis-timings and note mis-matches in the score.
Sting completes the transition to Yuletide carol from All-Soul's, by substituting the word "Christmas" for "this": Instead of
until this time next year.

but I did not adopt that change.
