Cahill scooped many of my ideas before I was born: I thought
at least I had devised the "M" layout in lieu of his usual Butterfly. Once
again he got there first: this from a 1920 article showing 8 different arrangements
for a kind of updatable atlas he was preparing, one of many stillborn Cahill
efforts. (My version joins at the S. Atlantic.) While the M-shape never supplanted
Cahill's Butterfly layout, he also showed it with yet another unused equal-area
design, his 1934 "E" variant (not the above letter E). |
